Pretence

If I were not restricted by what the society calls righteousness, would I be what I am right now? Do all men have two faces and is one of them uglier than the other? Do we do a lot of things just to keep others happy? Would the world be unliveable, if one fine morning everyone wakes up with a clean mind, a mind devoid of any code of conduct that has been dinned in by scriptures, society, law, etc? Did the most primitive of men have a social set up in place? What benefits are we reaping by adhering to one?

She said, "Hari, human beings, by birth are polygamous. But it is the society that pulls at the leash". I guess I have to agree with that... Don't we ogle at a pretty woman that we see? I am straight, hence, a woman... Feminists don't get offended... Do we really live our lives? And if we do live the way we want to, we become outcasts... I guess the guys who laid out the rules were obsessive compulsive... Why should they then have a code for everything you can imagine... from dictating what you eat to whom you are allowed to marry... And the so called sticklers to these dictums, breach them in the dark... They do not have the guts to do the same thing in broad daylight... Should some one do it, he is stigmatized... Isn't this hypocrisy going to end at all? Or am I wrong in choosing not to follow what has been laid down as customs / beliefs / value system???

Well, certainly, the rules and norms laid down by a few "thinkers" of their times were just each person's own personal opinion at that time, extremely volatile and subject to change at any point. However, code of conduct should really be a matter of personal ethics. If my conscience permits and approves my disloyal behavior, I should go ahead and do it. If I feel wildly polygamous one day and demurely monogamous the next day, am I justified?

Well I feel this change is not gonna happen all on a sudden... and it is pretty natural that a person's opinions and perceptions about things change. So I believe you are justified as long as you do not vacillate...

certain "codes" if i may call them
were "written" to society. all societies around the world have them - but some differ from place to place. taking this into consideration, the laws can be "bent" to suit a certain place or situation. however, the laws given to us are not all sensible and justifiable even by comman logic. therefore, we may choose to adhere to certain laws strictly, moderately, loosely.....it depends upon the individual - his concious, nature etc. this can be validated by the fact that no two people are the same. but, there's a catch! we belong to a "system". therefore we are dependant on it just as it is dependant on us. saying this, if the rules are adhered to in a particular "system",
the follower of the rule will face positive otcomes. but if the same wishes to break them, he or she will have to face the consequences.
i'm not saying all the rules are sensible and that they make sense but as we live in a "system" there should be at least some level of adherance, lest the person faces dire consequences. also, the non-conformance to rules will leave the society in complete disarray as anyone will do anything - which will result in a breakdown of the social order. hence, my final verdict is: IF YOU WANT TO BE SAFE, FOLLOW THE RULES - BUT IF YOU DON'T MIND FLIRTING WITH DANGER, THEN GO AHEAD AND FACE THE DIRE CONSEQUENCES. IT'S YOUR CHOICE, YOUR LIFE. but always remember: WHEN YOU SMILE THE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU, BUT WHEN YOU CRY, YOU CRY ALONE!

Nice one VigPrem. Second you on that. It is but true that we all live in a "society". At the same time, actually coming to think of it, Nobody really cares for the other. So if you have done something "unethical" , then its gonna be just a subject of entertainment and gossip for the rest. The real enemy is not society, but yourself, you live your own life laying boundaries wherever you feel like laying them. Also depends on how much heed you like to pay to what people talk about you. If you are the kind who couldnt care less, then be afraid of yourself, else be afraid of the society.

Maga Hari,
Sorry if I am rude, but the template simply hurts my eyes.. how can someone read small white text on a black bg?
please change it..(even now I am seeing after images of that black bg)

and oh, some rules are necessary maga. You cannot simply let people do whatever they want.. all hell will break loose, because not all people are "sensible" and not all people have the same definition of "sensible".

@ Dev
Maga, Thanks for the comments. I will see what I can do about the font and background. That is not being rude :)

IMHO..Most definitely yes ,its man's need for acceptance that makes him leave in a society.he inherently feels a need to be accepted..eiether a part of the larger society or a part of a cult which where he might beleive he is greater than the average man on the street.. well thats wat makes the media so powerful..
concience is just "a few norms of living" delivered to u at an impressionable age. wat if u were born a hun in medival age? wouldnt u react differently without remorse? concience is no common denominator..

Hari,
You and I know that its the society that is the stigma and the stimuli. Does it not sound like Oxy moron. Humans were called Homo sapiens mainly because of the fact that they co-exist. I may be wrong, but its undeniable that humans cannot live alone. So, formations of society and individual domination is an eventuality. If the individual who dominates had some lateral thinking then what transpires out of it always benefits the society. For example the concept of Democracy. If the individual who dominates is overwhelmed by parochialness and non descript behavious, what transpires out of it only affects the society. For example, untouchability, caste creed, religion anything that does not actually play a major role in forming a human being. I just recently was going through an English translation of Siva Purana and i was literally petrified by the first 100 pages. The so called Lord Brahma we pray had ogled at his own daughter Sandhya his first feminine creation. So,i do not know which society actually stated ogling is wrong. I personally believe in only one thing
"If what i say or do hurts a person mentally or physically then i consider myself as a sinner"
